Future Football stars impress at 2nd GEMS Football Cup

GEMS Football Cup - GEMS Sports Series

The 2nd GEMS Football Cup, part of the UAE’s biggest school sports series, took place over four days, 13th, 15th, 20th and 22nd of November at the GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail. The buzz around the national football tournament created the perfect atmosphere, as the boys and girls, Football teams from schools across the GEMS Education network battled to win the coveted trophies in the U10, U12, U14 and U16 categories.

Conducted under the umbrella of the GEMS Sports Series, the GEMS Football Cup aims to raise the bar on football excellence across GEMS schools as the students become the next generation of elite male and female footballers.

The excitement about the GEMS Football Cup could be seen in the numbers that attended the tournament this year. 29 GEMS Schools participated, with 913 players competing for top honours for their school.

In total there were over 203 matches played and more than 566 goals scored over the 4 days, in what is now become firmly established as the premier youth football tournament in the GEMS Education sports calendar.

The knockout stages themselves provided all the typical drama of the ‘beautiful game’ with several games decided by last minute goals or nail-biting penalty shoot-outs. We even saw new champions across age-groups being crowned this year, which speaks volumes about the development of youth football across GEMS schools from all corners of the UAE.

With GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis winning a majority of the Boys titles last season, there were many football teams coming into the tournament to mark their success this season. There were notable achievements throughout the tournament, as the boys from GEMS Wellington International School won the U10 category, GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis won the U12 category, GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail won the U14 category and Our Own English High School, Al Ain won the U16 category.

Whilst the girls from The Kindergarten Starters, GEMS Wellington International School, GEMS Modern Academy and GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail achieved champions status by winning the U10, U12, U14 and U16 Girls trophy respectively.

Former Manchester United football star and ambassador of GEMS Education, Dwight Yorke, was present at GEMS Football Cup and was very impressed with skill and talent showcased by GEMS players across schools. “I am delighted to be here and be a part of the second edition of the GEMS Football Cup. We witnessed such a great passion for football among the youth of GEMS this year and I am certain that more talent will emerge as the tournament progresses this year” he said.

He said that the GEMS Football Cup hoped to pave the way for youth to cultivate their sporting talents and aptitudes while fostering and building a healthier lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives. It is a unique opportunity for GEMS students from schools across the emirates to engage and share experiences, he said.
