Young Football Players Competing In More Than 300 Matches At The 3rd GEMS Football Cup

The 3rd GEMS Football Cup, part of UAE’s biggest school sports series was grand and even better this season. The Football Cup took place over five days, 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th and 27th of November 2018 across three state-of-the-art venues. The boys (990 players) competed at the GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail and the girls (550 players) completed at the GEMS Wellington Academy, Silicon Oasis while the U8 age category competed at the GEMS Heritage Indian School.

The buzz around the football tournament was huge and created the perfect atmosphere, as the boys and girls, Football teams from schools across the GEMS Education network battled to win the coveted trophies in the U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16 age categories.

Conducted under the umbrella of the GEMS Sports Series, the GEMS Football Cup aims to raise the bar on football excellence across GEMS schools as the students become the next generation of elite male and female footballers. Participation increased from 950 to 1540 this season.

The excitement about the GEMS Football Cup could be seen in the numbers that attended the tournament this year with 33 GEMS Schools participated, with 152 teams competing for top honours for their school.  

In total there were over 300 matches played over the 5 days, in what is now become firmly established as the premier youth football tournament in the school sports calendar.

The knockout stages themselves provided all the typical drama of the ‘beautiful game’ with several games decided by last minute goals or nail-biting penalty shoot-outs. We even saw new champions across age-groups and schools being crowned this year, which speaks volumes about the development of youth football across GEMS schools from all corners of the UAE. Goals by the dozen and football at its zenith. The GEMS Football Cup promised some amazing thrilling actions.

Various GEMS schools have won this year which been a good spread of schools receiving trophies. We saw many football teams coming into the tournament to mark their success this season. There were notable achievements throughout the tournament, as the boys from GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail (WEK) won the U10 category and U16 category, GEMS Wellington Academy – Silicon Oasis (WSO) won the U8 category, Our Own English High School – Fujairah (OOF) won the U12 category, GEMS Founders School – Al Barsha (GFS) won the U14 category.

Whilst the girls from Jumeirah Primary School (JPS), GEMS Wellington Academy – Silicon Oasis (WSO), GEMS FirstPoint School – The Villa (FPS), GEMS Wellington International School (WIS) and GEMS Metropole School - Motor city (MTS) achieved champions status by winning the U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16 Girls trophy respectively. 

The fusion of precision, team spirit and sportsmanship occupied centre stage as teams compete toe-to-toe with one another to win the ultimate title for their school and medals for themselves.
